Good article.
----------------
You said, "Varner makes an exception for food that is beyond her 100-mile boundary if 'what I eat helps poorer countries.' "

It is difficult to know how buying food from a poorer country helps it, or not. Many poorer countries have large agribusiness-type farms that cater to the wants of the industrialized nations instead of the local consumers. The presence of such farms in a poor region does not necessarily help the local populace.

To really know whether eating out-of-season fresh fruits helps a poorer country would take an expedition to that region to study the farm in question. Any conclusions drawn from such a study would still be debatable.

Decent article, but there is a mistake. Frank Miller is not the creator of Batman, he is just a comic book writer and artist who has worked on Batman.

Sorry for coming in a bit late.

Great discussion. I agree with number of points above.

I would like to caution all of you at solely relying on popular opinion or wisdom of the crowd which is what wikis are all about.

Would our society have progressed as much in the past 50-100 years if we were to solely rely on popular opinion?

Hi, Faith!

"Top-n lists" are great for SEO and click-through ... just so you know!

This is a clever way to use the rule of three recommendation in argument.

I believe your argument would be stronger if you acknowledge that even with code of ethics, people can offer unsubstantiated (no evidence) opinion. It's simply not as effective at persuasion as evidence-based opinion.

Faith, I really like your arguments for why the blogosphere needs to develop a code of ethics. I think you have good SEO - "search engine optimization" for Google or other search engines to find your blog and get it out to the rest of cyberspace.
Your internal copy debate over how bloggers will self-censor themselves because of our nation's desire for truthfulness shows a great sense of articulation.

Perhaps you could touch more on how bloggers not associated with journalism would fare under a code of ethics. For example, what if I don't want to "create journalism," but just rant and rave? Most bloggers would never say they are journalists, even if they are doing a form of journalism. This will be an interesting area to address especially as libel law and copyright moves further into the cyberspace.
